On June 1, 2025, Homa Bay County marked a significant milestone by hosting Kenya’s Madaraka Day celebrations for the first time in its history. The event took place at the newly renovated Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay Town, under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.” This theme highlighted the county’s rich maritime resources, particularly its expansive shoreline along Lake Victoria.
A Transformative Event for Homa Bay
The decision to hold Madaraka Day in Homa Bay was a historic first, bringing national attention to the county. Governor Gladys Wanga expressed her gratitude, stating that it was an honour to have been selected to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebration. She emphasized the importance of Lake Victoria to the county’s economy, noting that the theme of the day was timely given the county’s substantial maritime resources.
In preparation for the event, significant infrastructure upgrades were undertaken. The Raila Odinga Stadium underwent a major facelift, with the seating capacity expanded to accommodate 12,000 spectators. The project, which cost Ksh 500 million, was completed by May 20, 2025, ensuring the venue was ready for the national celebrations.

The Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay were a testament to the county’s growth and its potential on the national stage. The event not only commemorated Kenya’s attainment of internal self-rule in 1963 but also showcased Homa Bay’s commitment to development and its strategic importance in Kenya’s blue economy.
